Our own experience hiking a point to point trail is logistics can be a pain. If you are hiking alone you have to go out and back on the same track. If you are with a group you can spot a car but that means you have to drive multiple cars to the trail. That’s wasteful and expensive.
While we are in no way affiliated with the Buckeye Trail but we are big fans and want to do whatever we can to promote its use. That is why we offer a shuttle service. For $20 bucks up to five people, pets, and gear can hitch a ride and enjoy the trail.
You can visit buckeyetrail.org to explore an interactive map of the trail. We service the Stockport and New Straitsville sections which offer long sections of off road trail. The Buckeye Trail office staff is very helpful with introducing people to the trail.
Our camp sites are scattered around the our 150 acre property in Saltlick Township. We have picked what think are some of the most inviting locations on the property and set up areas to pitch a tent or hang a hammock. The camp sites are about a mile from the parking area. You can’t drive in but we can help get your gear to your site. A fire ring, wood, and water are provided in the cost of your stay. From your camp you are an easy hike away from the Buckeye Trail and Stone Church Hollow Trail in Wayne National Forest. The Sanctuary is remote but it is high ground and most cell phones receive a strong signal anywhere on the property.
Old Stone Church Trail and Wildcat Hollow Trail are located in Wayne National Forest. Both connect to the Buckeye trail. Stone Church is maintained as a horse back riding trail but it is very lightly used as a horse trail and is an excellent walking trail. Wildcat Hollow is a designated backpacking trail with dispersed camping permitted. You can hike to the Stone Church Trail from the Sanctuary. Wildcat Hollow is located in Monroe Township and requires you to drive or take the shuttle to the trail head. If you want a multiple day back packing adventure you can hike Wildcat Hollow then hike back to the Stone Church trail head on the Buckeye Trail. This would be a 2-3 day adventure.
Burr Oak State Park also offers great hiking and backpacking opportunities. The Buckeye Trail traverses the park from the Wildcat Hollow trail head to the Burr Oak Lake dam. After leaving the park the trail is a mixture of on road and off road sections until you return back to the Stone Church trail head.
AEP ReCreation lands are located in Morgan, Muskingum, and Noble counties. Included in this area is 24 miles of the Buckeye Trial, all off road, with easy access to AEP campgrounds. If you prefer to camp and hike out of a travel trailer this is the place to be. And its all free!
